I think there is more to it than unread marks unfortunately

I've also seen duplicated entries in views, shift-F9 will fix the problem but it tends to return eventually. So its a matter of using a db2 enabled discussion database for real over a period of time that brings the problems to light.

It will be interesting to see your performance results though.
